BCIS 5311 Final Paper Requirements Analyze an Industry Content Requirements First, choose your subject and submit for approval by the deadline in the schedule. You can choose an entire industry or subset of that industry to make your paper a little more cohesive as needed. For example, instead of education, you might focus on something a little easier to conquer like higher education or special education. The industry is up to you….banking, medicine, fashion, local government, information services, music, tons of examples to choose from. However, major retail organizations that are not part of a specific retail subset cannot be selected. For example, no Amazons, Walmarts, Targets, etc. Acceptable retail might be sports and outdoor retail or beauty retail. Provide the following analysis of your industry using the outline of information presented in your textbook. You may reference examples or cases from your textbook but will not “count” towards the requirements listed in each section. 1. Give an overview of the industry you are covering and talk about some of the business challenges and opportunities in that industry. 2. Provide three examples of different information systems or technologies that have revolutionized the industry you have chosen. With each one, provide the following information: a. Explain in detail what the information system does, how it works, and what type of system it is considered and why? Explain the tangible and intangible benefits of the information system as well as any problems or shortcomings. b. Explain, using one of the business models in chapter 3, how this IS accomplishes something innovative. Does it lessen customer’s buying power (Porter’s)? Does it enhance core competencies? Take your IS you’re discussing and frame it in business theory to illustrate the importance or innovation of the technology. c. Discuss underlying technologies of your IS. What technologies does it depend on to function? Networking/internet needs? Databases? Big data? Look that Part Two in Laudon to frame your answer to this section. 3. Discuss any social, ethical, or legal issues related to information systems in your industry. 4. Summarize conclusions on IS in your selected industry. Examples of some things you might want to discuss… fate of companies that couldn’t keep up, predictions on the future by industry experts, etc. Remember, the focus of the paper is on IS, not the industry. So you will tell me a little bit about the industry in general to give some background but the bulk of the paper should focus on IS and IS issues in that particular industry. Nuts and Bolts Requirements 1. Standard font size and margins apply. Bigger text and bigger margins doesn’t fool me into giving bigger grades. Only thing I do request is double spacing and a font size of at least 12pt. Cover page, headings, footers, etc. all up to you. 2. Should include support from AT LEAST 7 resources…one of which should be an academic journal. Academic articles on your subject can be easily located using library databases like Academic Search Complete which allows you to limit resources to peer-reviewed academic journals. All sources should be cited according to APA guidelines in the body of the text and your list of references should be included at the end of your paper, again, properly formatted according to APA guidelines. 3. Length of paper-this one also does not have a set minimum or maximum. You should do a thorough analysis of the industry and its use of information systems according to the content requirements above. I would suspect that most folks will need 7-10 pages to accomplish this. Shorter papers will probably not provide enough detail to answer the purpose of the paper. Do not assume that I know what you are talking about. Give enough detail in your paper that does not require the user to have more than a moderate amount of background information. For example, don’t state that this innovation lessens consumer power in Porter’s model without telling me how exactly it effects consumer power in terms of the model and in terms of what the IS does. A CRM in some industry would do this, and this, and this to build better relationships with customers in order to increase customer loyalty. With all of this value added stuff, the customer would lose this and that by switching to a competitor. The threat or the actual value of that loss would deter customers from switching which lessens their power. 4. Proofread your work ahead of time. There will be deductions for consistent issues with grammar and spelling due to the unprofessional nature of these errors. 4. I prefer Word but can accept other formats if needed. Most word processing software has an RTF file format that I can easily open in Word. Check with me ahead of time to make sure that I can open the file you are wanting to submit. 5. Submit your final paper by the due date in Canvas and ask questions ahead of time if you don’t understand the requirements for the assignment.
