Case Study Assignment Instructions
Overview
It is generally understood that the United States is home to the highest prison populations in the industrialized world. In fact, an examination of official statistics reveals that at any given point in time there are approximately 1.5 million offenders imprisoned in U.S. state and federal correctional institutions with an additional 700,00 + in the custody of locally run jails. These high incarceration rates demonstrate both the importance and significance of the role of corrections within the criminal justice system specifically and society generally. The impact of legislative action and policy decisions along with institutional day-to-day decision-making influences the manner in which the correction institution successfully (or unsuccessfully) punishes, supervises, rehabilitates, and hopefully reintegrates those accused and convicted of criminal offenses.
For this assignment you will develop a case study research assignment that examines and assesses corrections institutions from two perspectives: effective and ineffective practices with an emphasis on contrast and comparison. Your case study should carefully compare and contrast institutional practices that have informed both effective and ineffective corrections’ practices and subsequent outcomes. Your ineffective analysis will examine the Hampton Regional Jail/Virginia in the context of worst practices incorporating course study material into your analysis. Your proposal will also provide a comprehensive analysis of the corrections institution identified in your Case Study Proposal Assignment for the purpose of examining best practices. Your case study should include an emphasis on comparison/contrast between effective and ineffective practices and the resulting impact on corrections institutions’ outcomes.
